While students typically learn English vocabulary words most successfully through reading the words in context, there are times when we all need to refresh ourselves on the meanings and definitions of words out of context. These sites can provide you with interesting, interactive ways to strengthen your vocabulary skills and become more adept at navigating reading and writing passages.
Word-A-Day Flashcards---Each card has pronunciation guidance, multiple definitions, and tests for improving your memory of the words for each day. The rest of the Quizlet site also has a variety of other activities that can help you with your learning. Spend some time and see what you can get from this site.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary has been regarded for years as one of the best dictionaries available. This site allows you to search for words that you are struggling with, as well as a thesaurus that will help you find words with similar meanings. Dictionaries do not have to be boring books.

Whether you plan on working in business or not, these lesson can prove to be very useful.

One way to judge your progress in English is by checking that you have first learned the foundations of English vocabulary. A way to do this is by checking your progress against the 100 Most Commonly Used English Words list. If you have learned them all, move on to the next list; if you have more to learn, get out your dictionary and start learning.

Sometimes we need to brush up on words that are connected. Online flashcards are a good way to do this. At Manythings.org, there are a variety of lists ranging from business vocabulary to colors to types of food which will help you to learn the vocabulary you need to know. For the words you do not know, there is a list of different sites which will provide you with definitions for those words.

EFLnet.com provides excellent resources for studying more advanced ESL vocabulary. Each lesson provides a list of words and either practice activities or a quiz for that list. The practice activities and quizzes are all interactive, and they give you immediate feedback to help you learn in the best way possible.

One fun way to improve your vocabulary is by doing crossword puzzles. They provide great practice because you have to know both how to use the words in context and how to spell them as well. ITESLJ.org has some great crossword puzzles for whatever level of English you are at.
